IMPORTANT PARENTAL SURVEY 8.7.20

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers

We are currently preparing the school’s plans for September and there will be more information to follow before the end of term; however, there is a key question we want to consult parents on before we finalise our refreshed Covid19 Operational Protocol and risk assessment.

Since increasing our numbers in June we have been temporarily closing bubbles whenever we had a member of staff or a student experiencing symptoms. When we open fully in September we will be treating whole classes as bubbles and need to decide if we will still operate in this way, or if we follow the government guidance, which is to only close classes if an individual gets a positive test result.

Our reasons for temporarily closing classes when there is a suspected case would be to protect our school community from potential transmission of the virus when people are infectious before they are symptomatic. We know some of our students will not cooperate with the testing procedure, which will mean it’s not possible to get a result for them. Also, in September we will be welcoming back many of our students who have been shielding up to now, so there will be more students in school with additional medical needs which could make them more vulnerable if they were to be infected.

However, we also know that students have already had significant disruption to their learning.  Temporarily closing classes whilst awaiting test results will be disruptive and some of our students will not understand the change of routine. We are also aware that, as we enter the autumn term, there will be an increase in the normal coughs and colds which will mean more false alarms.

We are asking all parents to complete this short survey to help us gauge parental opinion:

https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=KsmRcR9BQ0e5J9VQwPSMlM7Qr5JTpctBskrQiGsal_lUQjZSRzNEWUQyVVlRWkc5NFYwS1JZWjRURC4u

VIRTUAL  INVITATION TO LEAVERS' PICNIC 17.7.20 - UPPER SCHOOL ONLY

Dear Parents and Carers

By now we would usually have already held our annual leavers’ assembly, but due to the pandemic situation we find ourselves in were unable to go ahead with it.

However, we couldn’t allow our students to go on to the next adventure in their lives without celebrating their time here at Manor Green School and so we are holding a Leavers’ Picnic for them on  Friday 17 July from 12-00 to 13-30.  Unfortunately, we cannot invite all of Upper School to the picnic for obvious reasons, but we will set up a Zoom meeting so that students can join in virtually if they wish.

On the day we will set up a link and share it with you via email.  We hope you can join us!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on my direct school email below.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING SCHOOL RE-OPENING 20.5.20

Dear Parents and Carers

Following on from last week’s communication, first let me thank you for the speed with which many of you have responded to the questionnaire and remind anyone who hasn’t yet done so that we will need these returned before we can take your child back into school.

We need to prepare classrooms and staff need to be fully briefed on the new expectations before we can begin our new operating procedures; therefore,  the school will be closed to students with the exception of a very small number of children on both the 1st and 2nd of June. If you are a parent of a student currently attending, you will be contacted by a member of the leadership team about arrangements for this. If you have any questions please direct them to Warren Griffiths.  We will open to all the students we currently have regularly attending on the 3rd June and we’ll begin the process of welcoming back more students from the 8th June.

We will be publishing both the draft risk assessment and the operating protocol by the end of the week. This will give everyone time over half term to respond with any comments or questions they may have. If we can have your responses by the 2nd of June, we will be able to consider them before we publish the version we will operate under on the 5th of June before more students return to school.

I would also like to take this opportunity via the official ‘Thank at Teacher Day’ to thank all my staff for their hard work and flexibility during these unusual times. I hope parents will join me in showing appreciation to the class teams who’ve supported them.

Message from Braywick Heath Nurseries
Good news at last, we have made adjustments for social distancing and have brought stock out onto the front lawn with till and card machines under the entrance portico. So it is all front open area for the foreseeable future.  That will ensure safety for staff, volunteers and our customers. The number of customers and cars will be managed at the main gates to enable 2 m distancing. PPE will be on hand and used, and all payments by card in line with Covid management guidance rules. Our skeleton team (Jan and Ben) have kept the stock well and it is time for new homes and carers. The plants are looking excellent.  Tim has re-joined us and with Ben and Steve’s assistance has saved the day for our maintenance customer.s  Managing the new rules and distancing will result in limited car and people numbers of course but the Nurseries team are back in business.  We shall appreciate the return of our volunteers to support Jan and we have missed you since 24/03. Please call if you would like to assist.  Hanging basket orders are welcome of course  Happy gardening – excellent social isolation activities - with 2m distancing of course,  We shall never give up.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER 13.5.20

Dear Parents and Carers

I hope this communication finds you well and in tolerable circumstances.

I am sure you will all have heard the Prime Minister’s announcement of the plans to come out of the current lock down. More detailed guidance for schools was published at 7pm on 11 May, the full documents are linked at the end of this letter.

Special schools are not bound by the advice regarding which year groups we should prioritise, so we will be looking at a variety of other factors as we gradually increase the number of students offered a place. Please rest assured that there is no pressure on parents to accept a school place and all usual attendance expectations and monitoring will remain paused until such  time as the government advice on this changes.

As I know you will appreciate, the gradual reopening of the school during an on-going pandemic is hugely complex and not without risk. Maintaining the safety and wellbeing of the whole school community will be our key objective and to achieve this we all need to work in close partnership with honesty and transparency. In the spirit of this, I need to be clear with everyone, there is no such thing as social distancing in a school such as ours.

The Government guidance states testing will be available for any member of staff, student or member of the student's household who develops symptoms. However, as I’m sure you realise, there will be no way of being certain that Covid19 is not present in the school. There will undeniably be a risk of the virus being transmitted by asymptomatic students or staff, or by people before symptoms have started to become apparent. If we do get confirmed cases all students and staff in the class grouping will have to isolate for 14 days.  We will be keeping groupings consistent in order to achieve this.

We will be writing a protocol for both staff and parents that sets out our new procedures and expectations, along with a full risk assessment.  We will get this circulated as soon as possible. We will also be consulting with both staff and parents on this before implementation. The first step in consulting parents will be a conversation with your class teacher or HLTA about your current thoughts on your child returning to school before September. This is an informal consultation simply to gauge demand for places and current concerns. We hope to have completed this first step by Friday 15th of May, so please do make time for this conversation unless you have already spoken about this previously.

Next week, our next step for parents will be a more detailed questionnaire about your thoughts and family circumstances. This will include questions that are essential for us to fully risk assess individual students and prioritise places to those in greatest need of them. We will require a swift return of these, especially from parents who would want a place offered as soon as possible after the 1st of June.  We won’t be able to offer a place to any further students without these, as they will contain key questions we need to consider in our risk assessments. Parents who return these by 5pm  on Wednesday 20th  May will be informed before half term if their child is to be offered a place to return to school after the 1st of June.

Parents need to be aware that provision offered in June will not be the familiar routine of school as it was just before we closed. Students will be grouped with different peers in different classrooms and the curriculum will be well-being focused rather than academic learning. We will ensure there is at least one member of staff who is familiar to the students and trained on their medical needs, unless more are required by the individual risk assessment for students. We will also not be able to guarantee to maintain the offer for the rest of the academic year as our risk assessments will need to be dynamic in these very uncertain times.

I hope parents will continue to keep the lines of communication open and work in collaboration with the school.  We are still here for you ‘virtually’ as necessary at the moment.

Take care and stay safe.

Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers

Message from the Headteacher

A very warm virtual welcome back to the new term. We hope you are all well and still managing to stay safe in these continued challenging times.

It’s been really encouraging to hear the variety of things all the classes are providing and we hope that the learning activities and support you are getting from your class teams is helpful. Please don’t feel pressured to attend all sessions or complete all the work provided, we know everyone’s family circumstances are different and we encourage you to look after everyone’s emotional wellbeing at this time, including your own. There is someone available if you want to talk through anything, either from the class team, the leadership team or Sharon Carrigan our family advisor. If we haven’t heard from families in a little while, we will give you a call and so you may receive a call from a withheld number just to check everything is OK.  If you can’t pick up, please send us a message when you are able to.

NHS USE OF SCHOOL SITE 6.4.20

Dear Parents and Carers
Manor Green School has been asked to host the maternity outpatient service normally located at St Mark’s Hospital in Maidenhead for Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. The service is being relocated to make room at St Mark’s for critical Covid19 patients and also to separate these patients from new and expecting mothers.

Manor Green School has been able to offer the use of a contained section of the Invictus building. The NHS will have a separate entrance and sole use of this section while they are located here. This will be fully risk assessed by both Manor Green School and the NHS and will not have any impact on our being partially open to students already identified for being offered a place after Easter.  The NHS already uses part of this building for their respite services to children, so the school already has a working relationship with them for use of our facilities.

The service will operate from Manor Green from Wednesday 8th April. We are pleased to be of service to the NHS and our local community at this challenging time.

With best wishes
Joolz Scarlett
Headteacher

UPDATE 3.4.20

Dear Parents and Carers

Message from the Headteacher - Final email of the term!
As we come to the end of a most unusual term, we’d like to thank all our families for their patience, understanding and cooperation. We anticipate the new term starting on the 20th April to begin much the same as this one has ended, however if advice to schools changes over the holiday we will update you all here.

In the new term we will be able to send families whose children receive free school meals food vouchers to their email address using the new government scheme. Please  ensure the school has your most up-to-date email address by emailing Warren Griffiths: warren.griffiths@manorgreenschool.co.uk if it has changed.

We understand this is a troubling and confusing time for a lot of our students so if you need any Nurture or Behaviour support during the holidays please contact Amelia King via email at amelia.king@manorgreenschool.co.uk .  We have attached three Easter social stories in case these are of help to you: Easter Social Story 1, Easter Social Story 2, Easter Social Story 3.

We hope everyone has a safe and peaceful break.

News:

  • Sarah Hughes is one of our Supply SSAs and she is carrying out the following research. Would you be interested in taking part?
Have your say.  What are your experiences of using 'Hidden Disability Sunflower Lanyards'?   Does your child have a primary diagnosis for Autism/ASD?  Have you encountered problems taking your child out due to the hustle and bustle of public places?  Have you used the Hidden Disability Sunflower Lanyards

We are looking for parents willing to take part in a telephone discussion to find out about your
experiences of being out and about going about your everyday activities. We want to understand
what help, if any, you have received from wearing the lanyards and what more could be done to
enable your child to be more comfortable in public places. It can be difficult for others in the
community to recognise, acknowledge or understand the challenges faced by children with ASD
(autism spectrum disorder) and caring for them. This research will attempt to tell your story with a
         view to educating others.

It is hoped that wearing the lanyard will enable you and your child to access any help, care and
assistance available to give you the space you need when going about your business. It is not
essential that you have seen any value from using the Lanyards to take part; we are interested in
gathering lots of different points of  view.

You can help us by agreeing to be part of our research. The telephone discussion can take place at a
time that is most convenient to you and will take no more than 45 minutes. It will be with an Manor
Green staff member and will form part of her Masters dissertation. We will only need one parent per
child and once the study has the required number of participants no more will be invited to take
part.  If you are interested in taking part, please email Sarah Hughes on
        sarah.hughes4@stu.mmu.ac.uk.

  • Code Camp -  a leading authority on kids’ coding education worldwide. We run fun and engaging holiday, after-school and in-school programs introducing students to the creative world of coding.  Sadly due to COVID-19, we are unable to hold our camps so we've been working really hard to adapt our resources so kids can continue to become digital creators and storyteller from the safety of their own homes.  With coding being a mandatory part of the curriculum we'd like to help educate children during this time, and give parents some much-needed peace! We've waived our subscription fees for access to our online proprietary software, Code Camp World, and created lesson plans for children aged 7-12 to follow along independently.
Parents will be able to access these lesson plans by going to codecampworld.com and entering their details. The resources will then be sent to them immediately.
  • What’s new is the regular update of important news and information for you and your family from Contact, the charity for families with disabled children. There’s so much to tell everyone at the moment and this publication will be sent out every week for the foreseeable future.  Please look at Contact’s website: www.contact.org.uk and sign up for the weekly updates.

UPDATE 27.3.20

Dear Parents and Carers

Message from the Headteacher
We hope everyone is keeping well and safe at this troubling time.

We’ve had further communication from the Government.  Please see Minister Ford’s open letter attached.  We have also received further guidance on Social distancing in education settings, which we are following and ensuring numbers in school remain low: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-implementing-social-distancing-in-education-and-childcare-settings/coronavirus-covid-19-implementing-social-distancing-in-education-and-childcare-settings as well as advice on shielding the really vulnerable groups.  If any of you have received a letter from the NHS identifying your child as being extremely vulnerable, please can you let Warren Griffiths know: warren.griffiths@manorgreenschool.co.uk -  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-on-shielding-and-protecting-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19/guidance-on-shielding-and-protecting-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19

We understand from some of our parents that there is some anxiety about the NICE guidelines on critical care and learning disabilities.  Clarification has been issued, which some of you may find useful to read: https://www.nice.org.uk/news/article/nice-updates-rapid-covid-19-guideline-on-critical-care

We know this is a difficult time for all of our families.  If anyone is experiencing additional financial hardship please let us know. We wish you a restful and safe weekend.

update 23.3.20

Dear Parents and Carers

I hope you are all keeping your heads above water at this very difficult time and staying safe and well.  Attached are some therapy activities and support notes from Heidi Sheppard, our play therapist,  which you might find useful.  They are also available from the website.  After the DfE update, I have included a message from Longridge about facilities they have for the children of Key Workers.

Please be aware that there are notifications going around social media informing parents that they need to share their bank details to receive Free School Meals' money.  They vary in what they say and how they are worded so the important message to everyone is the same as always, do not share bank details with anyone and to make sure the advice you are getting is from a reliable and recognised source.

Longridge activity days for the children of Key Workers

Many of our instructors are from overseas, and so have found themselves unable to get home. More importantly, all of them have expressed a desire to help.
So! We have the instructors, we have the equipment, and we want to do what we can. A surprising number of people have been in touch today asking what childcare we can offer, as there are many people that still have to work to keep the world turning. For this reason, we are offering Activity Days for the children/dependents of Key Workers – please note that these are for Key Workers only. The official advice is for isolation and social distancing, so if you can stay at home, please do. These days are only for the children of those who need to work. For this reason, we are suggesting a donation of £10 per day. However we appreciate this may not be possible, so if you find you cannot manage this then please contact us directly to book. These days will be running from 8.45am – 5pm, and will include a range of our suitably ‘social distanced’ activities. You can book online here – https://alfvillages.cinolla.com/longridge/courses/activity-days
There are many benefits to being outside, and we are also following the government guidelines and have put the following measures in place
* Maximum 6/8 in a group
* Everything must be booked online or via phone. No one is allowed to book in person.
* We do not want parents to congregate while dropping off and picking up. If they can stay at their cars until called over by a member of Staff. The Instructor will sign the parents/guardians name and time on arrival and departure on behalf of them.
* All guests to have hands sanitised on immediate arrival and hands will be sanitised and washed periodically through the day.
* We will not be using wrist bands.
* We will not be opening the shop.
* Catering will not be offered and lunch will need to be provided by the parents/guardians. If this is an issue, please contact the bookings team

Bucks Children and Young People's Therapy Service
The Therapy Service is currently (as of now) operating as business as usual but this is a shifting scene and they are taking direction from Public Health England and Government updates to NHS Trusts.

They are not cancelling any clinics or appointments, however visiting restrictions are having an impact on this.

Some schools have implemented a no visitor policy and some community facilities e.g. Tesco community room and Chesham Town Hall have closed their bookings which impacts on their ability to deliver services (across therapies, Health Visitors. Where external community clinic rooms are being cancelled they are trying to rearrange and parents are being contacted directly. They are also still providing home visits should the family not be self-isolating and the visit is not critical. They also follow Trust policy on PPE and infection control should they be a critical service for that family in self-isolation – this is not their usual function. They await further direction but for now they are open as usual and delivering as fully as they can.

We appreciate how difficult and unsettling the past week has been as a result of our school closure. These are uncertain times making it extremely difficult to plan so we appreciate the patience and understanding that you have shown in your communication with us.

The school is following guidelines set out by the government:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-maintaining-educational-provision/guidance-for-schools-colleges-and-local-authorities-on-maintaining-educational-provision

This guidance sets out the key principles we should be working to. The most important one is “If it is at all possible for children to be at home, then they should be."  It also states “If a child needs specialist support, is vulnerable or has a parent who is a critical worker, then educational provision will be available for them.”   The government has defined ‘vulnerable’ as including children with EHCPs, however, as all our students have EHCPs it is not possible for the school to meet this as there is also an expectation that the numbers in schools will be low, which reduces the risk.   We also believe we should not be taking children who meet the medical criteria for social distancing for 12 weeks, as previously shared.

Moving forward, we will be opening between 9.30 and 2.30 from Monday to a very small cohort of students; these students being selected on the basis of parents/carers being in Key Worker roles or the students having significant vulnerability which may require formal Social Care support. If your child comes under one of these categories then we will be contacting you directly by telephone to discuss arrangements. If you are not contacted directly by us,  then please take this as school being closed to your child until further notice and you will continue to receive work sent by your child's class team.

There is some potential for our staff to provide various outreach services to students who can't come into school. If you would like to discuss this outreach option please email warren.griffiths@manorgreenschool.co.uk

There is further government guidance for parents here:

KEYWORKERS 19.3.20

Dear Parent/Carers

Whilst we wait on the government to define updated criteria for Key Workers we are in the process of trying to ascertain the number of students we have whose parents/carers are Key Workers in this current climate.

If you therefore consider yourself to be a Key Worker and have no other childcare available to you during the on-going school closure period, could you please email warren.griffiths@manorgreenschool.co.uk or text 07944 635443 giving details of your child and the nature of your employment.

To re-iterate, the school remains closed to all students until further notice, we are still working closely with the Local Authority in this swiftly moving crisis.

UPDATE 19.3.20

Dear Parents / Carers

Many of you will be aware of the government announcement made yesterday evening regarding schools being directed to close until further notice from the end of the day on Friday. Further guidance though directs schools to remain open for students that have a parent who is a Key Worker or if the student is deemed as vulnerable e.g. they have an Education, Health and Care Plan or allocated Social Worker.

The basis of this direction works on the premise that schools will be able to operate on skeleton staff as there will be a significantly reduced number of students attending as for most schools only a small percentage of students fall under the ‘vulnerable’ bracket. However, this clearly does not take into consideration SEN schools like ourselves where ALL our students have Education, Health, and Care Plans.

This is an issue that all local and national SEN schools are facing and we are therefore seeking advice from the Local Authority and Public Health England this morning with regards to our operational position for next week.

Further correspondence will be sent out as soon as we have any updates.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MEDICATION COLLECTION IS STILL GOING AHEAD FOR TODAY AND THE EXPECTATION IS THAT PARENTS WILL COME TO COLLECT IT.

MEDICATION HELD IN SCHOOL 18.3.20

Dear Parents / Carers

Given the decision made today to close all schools in Scotland and Wales and an imminent decision being made about England, we have to look at the realisation of longer term closure.

With this is mind we want to make arrangements for any medication in school to go home to students. Despite previous advice directing that visitors could not come on site, we are now asking that parents/carers come to school tomorrow between the hours of 12-00 and 14-00 to collect their child's medication. Please enter by the side entrance near the pool and staff will meet you in the large hall with the medication.  If this time is not suitable please contact the school to make individual arrangements. If there is anything else in school you would also like to collect, please contact the class teacher.

For any further information please contact Warren or Helen.

UPDATE FOM HEADTEACHER 17.3.20

Dear Parents and Carers

We currently find ourselves in unprecedented times given the risk to health that COVID-19 poses. As a school leadership team, we have been working over the past five days to look at how we can safely open and not only meet the day to day needs of our students but also ensure risk to health remains at a minimum.

As a consequence of a step-up in advice from the government regarding self-isolation and social distancing we find ourselves in a situation whereby around 35% of staff members are currently not in work; not all with symptoms. However, the number of suspected cases is very much on the increase and we are certain that the number of staff members and students being off will continue to increase at a rate that is difficult to keep on top of.

We have looked carefully at further Government guidance published today, which can be found here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-guidance-on-social-distancing-and-for-vulnerable-people/guidance-on-social-distancing-for-everyone-in-the-uk-and-protecting-older-people-and-vulnerable-adults

While this guidance states it is for vulnerable adults, in the absence of anything equivalent for vulnerable children, we believe we should be guided by it. Given that it identifies learning disabilities as a risk category and this applies to the vast majority of our students, a decision has been made to close the school until this guidance is lifted by the government, or we receive different advice.

This decision was not made lightly and was made in conjunction with Governors and the Local Authority. We appreciate that this will cause many implications for our students, their parents/carers, and wider family members but there is no other viable option at this time without compromising the safety of our students.

We have also discussed our current situation with the other Headteachers who form part of The BASS Group (Addington, Arbourvale, Brookfields, Kennel  Lane, The Avenue and The Castle).  Kennel Lane is closing  today and the remainder of these schools are currently carrying out their own risk assessments with most, if not all,  closing  within the next day or two.

Staff will continue to work (both from home and a minimal number in school) so that on-going educational material can be provided to parents/carers which students can do at home. We are also looking at ways we can support our students in receipt of Free School Meals.

All students have been set up with a school email address and added into a class group on Microsoft Teams for parents or students to access home learning. Class staff will be in contact with you directly with regards to work being sent home.

If you have any further questions and would like to speak to a senior member of staff please contact Warren or Helen:

UPDATE FROM HEADTEACHER 16.3.20

Dear Parents / Carers

We feel we must advise parents we almost certainly do have Covid19 within our school community. We have received communications from staff and parents and there are various members of the school community who are showing symptoms.  Some have been told by medical professionals that they almost certainly have it, but given the testing decision by the government, we cannot confirm cases.

The advice to schools is to remain open and we have consulted with Public Health England and the local authority who have contributed to our decision making to partially openif at all possible, from Wednesday.

We have worked with the school nurse to identify students most at risk of complications if they were to contract Covid19 and we will not be open to these students as it poses too great a risk to their health. We will remain closed to these students until the current risk is diminished.

We will also have to ask some students not to attend on a day by day basis as there may not be staff available who are trained on aspects of their Care Plan or to meet their specific needs.

On Tuesday we will be contacting the parents/carers of the children who we will not be able to open to.  If you do not receive a message from a senior staff member, please assume your child is able to attend school on Wednesday if you choose to send them.

LETTER FROM HEADTEACHER 13.3.20 - SCHOOL CLOSURE

Dear Parents/Carers

The school will be closed on Monday so that we can start to determine potential student attendance and staffing levels and a decision about Tuesday will be made and shared as early as possible.

We have had further communication with Public Health England today and their continued advice is that schools should remain open regardless of whether a school has experienced a suspected or confirmed case of the Coronavirus. Unfortunately, this stance is very much geared towards mainstream schools where the student population is deemed 'healthy'. Given that suspected cases are not going to be tested unless admitted to hospital, we will not be able to accurately report to parents on suspected or confirmed cases.

There is no specific guidance available from Public Health England for Special Educational Needs’ schools, but due to the cohort of our students and the complex medical needs that some face, we feel that we need to implement a more detailed response.

Therefore, as per NHS guidance, we are asking parents/carers to isolate any students that are presenting with symptoms (a high temperature and/or a new, continuous cough) for a period of seven days. Additionally, if students do not present with any symptoms but parents/carers do not feel comfortable with their child coming into school then we fully accept this and will authorise any absence. Where your child has additional medical needs we advise you to seek medical advice on the risk posed by attending school.

Further advice and guidance is available at:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/stay-at-home-guidance-for-people-with-confirmed-or-possible-coronavirus-covid-19-infection

We will also be asking any staff members with symptoms to self-isolate as well. This may result in the school being left with unsafe staffing levels so we will be reviewing our staffing resources on a day by day basis and if we do not have safe staffing levels for the proceeding day, we may make the decision to close the school until staffing levels are back to a minimum level.

Please can parents inform us if they plan to keep their child off school as soon as possible by emailing sharon.glover@manorgreenschool.co.uk with a possible length of absence so we can accurately assess our ratios.  If you do not have access to email, please call or text Warren Griffiths on 07944 635443.

Department for Education - Coronavirus Advice for parents/guardians

You should not be unduly worried about the possibility of your children catching the Coronavirus.

There is no reason why your children should not continue to attend their early years, school or further education setting as normal.

A UK wide campaign has been launched to provide clear advice on how to slow the spread of Coronavirus.  Please help to support the campaign which promotes basic hygiene practices, such as regularly washing hands and always sneezing into a tissue, to stem the spread of viruses.

We recognise that some families or children may be planning to travel to China during the forthcoming half term period. If so, please refer to the FCO’s latest travel advice via the links:

Research Project Invitation: An exploration of the impacts of and support needs associated with a mid-schooling diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition

The National Autistic Society is interested in furthering their understanding of the support needs of children who receive a mid-schooling autism diagnosis. It is anticipated that children who go through part – or even the majority – of their school lives without a diagnosis might, as a result, have differing or additional support needs in comparison with children who are diagnosed at a young age.

I am a postgraduate student at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland, studying for a masters degree in Applied Psychology. With the input and support of Ian Dale and Matt Tiplin at the National Autistic Society, I am carrying out my dissertation in this area. I aim to explore the topic by focusing upon children who are diagnosed between the ages of 14 and 16 years old and am carrying out ten semi-structured interviews - during January and early February 2020 - with education professionals and parents with experience in this area.

A Schools Information Sheet is attached to this email, which explains more about the plans for and timetable of the project. If you are interested in participating, please contact me at h.swain@rgu.ac.uk. I will then send you a Participant Information Sheet, which goes into more detail about what participation would involve, enabling you to make an informed decision about whether you wish to take part..  Hayley Swain

We look forward to seeing you again on Monday, 6 January and hope you all have a happy and peaceful holiday!

  • Flu vaccine - for information purposes, a letter from the Berkshire Healthcare service is attached concerning flu viral shedding and whether parents should be keeping their children off school. There is absolutely no reason for any child to be kept off school during the flu vaccine delivery. Although the nasal spray is a live vaccine, it has been weakened which means that when given to children up their noses it produces a slow immune response but does not cause them to get flu. They therefore will be unable to spread the flu virus to others around them. The only exception to this is if you have a child who is so immunocompromised that they need to be kept isolated (in which case it is unlikely that they will be in school)
  • Wokingham, Bracknell & Districts Mencap: October Bracknell mailingCarers' lunch on 21 November; Christmas party on 29 November; Bracknell Forest Lottery
  • Pantomime - Snow White at Pearce Suite, Magnet Leisure Centre,  Maidenhead from 21– 29 December

Information sent on behalf of Berkshire Healthcare School-aged Immunisation Team
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING MEASLES MUMPS AND RUBELLA VACCINATIONS

There has been a sharp increase in the number of cases of measles reported nationally and globally https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-47940710 as well as an increase in Mumps cases for 15-24 year olds. Berkshire Healthcare provides immunisations against infectious diseases for all school-aged children, and we want to assure you it is not too late to get your child vaccinated. Children are at risk to themselves and the wider community if they have not received two doses of MMR (usually given at 13 months and 3 ½ years). Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can be very unpleasant and sometimes lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications, initial symptoms may be similar to cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose and high temperature.

Measles is a notifiable disease and if your child has not received two combined MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) doses of the vaccine or, has previously received the singular MMR vaccines, they will NOT be protected and they are AT RISK of contracting the illness as well as passing it on to others, especially at risk are the vulnerable (babies and individuals with life limiting conditions). Two combined MMR doses are required for full protection.  If you are unsure about your child’s immunisation history, check their Red Book.

There is no charge for this vaccination and we offer a number of community clinics across Berkshire both after school and on Saturdays, the service is available to all children attending state, independent and special schools. This vaccination is not routinely available from GP practices for children of school age.

If your child attends a school in Wokingham, Reading or West Berkshire and you would like your child to be vaccinated please contact us by emailing bks-tr.SchoolimmunisationTeam@nhs.net  or calling 01189 207575.

If your child attends a school in Slough, Windsor, Ascot and Maidenhead or Bracknell Forest and you would like your child to be vaccinated please contact us by emailing
bks-tr.SchoolimmunisationTeam@nhs.net   or calling 01753 636759.

Messages for Bracknell families:

  • Bracknell Family Information Service
Dear Parent / Carer, We are looking for recommendations!!
The Bracknell Forest Parent Carer Forum has suggested it would be useful to have a section on the Local Offer listing local services such as hairdressers, dentists, driving instructors, cafes, etc., that either specifically cater for, or have an understanding of/experience with SEN/ASD/ADHD, etc.   If you can help us by recommending any local service provider that you have used in the past, please email details to:
fis@bracknell-forest.gov.uk or call us on 01344 353133.  We will then contact them to ask if they’d like to be listed (for free) on the BF SEND Local Offer website.
  • Help needed with Education Transport Training Development
    Dear Parents and Carers
Bracknell Forest Council’s Education Transport team are reviewing the training for drivers and Passengers Assistants working on school and college transport.
They will be focusing more on the individual needs of children and young people and are very keen to work in collaboration with parents and carers.
If any parents and carers are available to assist in developing the training alongside professionals or to provide feedback on the training itself, please get in contact with:
    Matt Howlett on (01344 355157 / education.transport@bracknell-forest.gov.uk )

Dear Parents and Carers

This week's Excellence Everywhere video is now available.

Please click the link below.

http://www.manorgreenschool.co.uk/Video-Gallery

This is the final video and email for the term and for 2018 and we wish you all a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope that 2019 brings you health and happiness.

News:

  • Students return to school on Monday 7th January 2019 and the Key Diary Dates for term 3 are attached
  • We raised £134.72 towards school funds from the school photographs and approximately £300 from the Christmas orders so a huge thank you to everyone who supported these projects
  • Manor Green School is a member of the Schools Partnership Programme (SPP) along with three other special needs' schools: Kennel Lane in Bracknell and Brookfields and Addington in Reading.  The project is funded by the Education Endowment Foundation and is an important part of our mission to support senior leaders in improving the attainment of all pupils, and particularly the most disadvantaged
  • We congratulate the Manor Green swimming team who came first overall in the special schools' swimming gala at Brookfields -  see the article in the A&MSSP newsletter attached
  • Old IT Equipment Donations:  One of our classes will be starting an IT recycling project in January and we are looking for donations. If any parents/carers have old laptops or desktops at home that are gathering dust not being used, we would love to take them off your hands. Ideally these need to be wiped of data before being donated. Our school IT team will be ensuring this has been completed before students work with the equipment.

If you think your child would be interested in attending, we suggest contacting Dan on the number on the flyer to discuss his/her specific needs beforehand.

Some feedback about the PHAB club at Eton:

Both of my boys had a great time at PHAB club last Friday. They felt relaxed, everybody was friendly towards them and they enjoyed being there. They could not think of anything that they would like to change and are looking forward to the next one.  I spoke to Dan beforehand and he was very helpful in discussing my son's needs and how they could meet them. I was able to stay in a lounge nearby enjoying cups of tea and chatting with other parents.

News and reminders:

Message from the Local Authority: Level 3 Heatwave Alert

A level 3 heatwave alert has been issued from July 5th to July 9th. This means that temperatures are very  likely to rise to levels that increase the risk of ill health among vulnerable people.

Children’s susceptibility to high temperatures varies; those under four years of age, who are overweight, or who are taking certain medication may be at increased risk of adverse effects. Some children with disabilities or complex health needs may be more susceptible to high temperatures. Children with breathing conditions such as asthma or COPD may be more affected when there are high air pollution levels together with hot weather.

The Public Health Team are working with our communications team to ensure messages go out to families.

“Stay out of the sun. Keep your home as cool as possible – shading windows and shutting them during the day may help. Open them when it is cooler at night. Keep drinking fluids. If there’s anybody you know, for example an older person living on their own, who might be at special risk, make sure they know what to do.”

SPORTS' DAYS - HEATWAVE

Dear Parents / Carers

Due to the current heatwave, please be aware of the contingency plan for sports’ days on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

All sports’ days will be going ahead as planned but we will be limiting the amount of time that students will be out in the sun and between races they will be given the opportunity to find shade and drink water.

Students will not be allowed outside to watch every race, but will be called to compete in any scheduled races.  Staff will assess how long the students in their class are able to cope with the hot weather and it might be that some of the end races are cancelled.  If appropriate, some activities may be held indoors.

Please ensure that your child brings sun cream, a hat and a water bottle to school during the current hot weather and we would be grateful if you could ensure that they also bring their house T shirt into school this week.

  • Books of raffle tickets for our Summer Fair  have been sent home with the students.  Please return any money and stubs to school in an envelope marked for the attention of Sharon Carrigan.  There are lots of great prizes (first prize is £200) so you could be the lucky one, but you’ve got to be in it to win it!  You’ll also be able to buy tickets on the day (this Sunday 1 July).
  • Many thanks to everyone who supported our fundraising day last Friday; we raised £146.  £73 will be donated to Macmillan and £73 will go into school funds
  • DON'T FORGET TO COME ALONG TO THE SUMMER FAIR ON SUNDAY!
  • We will be replacing the photographs displayed around the school in the near future as many of the students have moved on to pastures new.  If we have an individual photograph of your child you are welcome to have it free of charge.  However, if you wish to make a donation to the school, this would be gratefully received.  Please contact me if you are interested.

EXCELLENCE EVERYWHERE AND WEEKLY NEWS' UPDATE 19.1.18

Dear Parents / Carers

This week's Excellence Everywhere video, Issue 14, is now available from the website: http://www.manorgreenschool.co.uk/Video-Gallery

News and Reminders
• The Key Diary Dates have been updated to v12:  9/2/18 assembly change to National Citizenship Assembly.  Please note that the times for 9/2/18 were out of alignment on the hard copy sent home.  Revised version attached.
• We have a case of diagnosed Impetigo in Hargreaves class (First School).  Impetigo is a common and highly contagious skin infection that causes sores and blisters. Impetigo occurs when the skin becomes infected with bacteria.  The bacteria can be spread easily through close contact with someone who has the infection, such as through direct physical contact, or by sharing towels or flannels.
As the condition doesn't cause any symptoms until four to 10 days after initial exposure to the bacteria, it's often easily spread to others unintentionally.
Children and people with diabetes or a weakened immune system – either due to a condition such as HIV or a treatment such as chemotherapy – are most at risk of developing impetigo.
The advice below can also help to prevent the spread of the infection:
•    don't share flannels, sheets or towels with anyone who has impetigo – wash them at a high temperature after use
•    wash the sores with soap and water and cover them loosely with a gauze bandage or clothing
•    avoid touching or scratching the sores, or letting others touch them – it may help to ensure your nails are kept clean and short
•    avoid contact with newborn babies, preparing food, playing contact sports, or going to the gym – until the risk of infection has passed
•    wash your hands frequently – particularly after touching infected skin
•    washable toys should also be washed – wipe non-washable soft toys thoroughly with a cloth that has been wrung out in detergent and warm water and allowed to dry completely
If you think that the infection has spread to someone else, make sure they're seen by a GP as soon as possible.

MMR CATCH-UP SESSION FOR YEAR 9 STUDENTS 17.1.18

Dear Parents / Carers of Year 9 students

For your information, I am forwarding a message from the Berkshire NHS Immunisation Team.

From January 2018 the School Aged Immunisation team will be offering a catch up MMR programme alongside routine delivery of Meningitis ACWY and a booster dose of Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio. This appears to have caused some confusion as we have received some feedback and completed forms from parents consenting to the MMR vaccines, when their children have already received two doses.

To clarify the catch up MMR programme is for children who:
Received no doses of MMR as a child (normally given in the UK at 12 months and 3 years 4 months)
Received single MMR vaccines as a child (these do not count as MMR) therefore two doses would need to be given of the triple vaccine
Received less than two doses of MMR as a child

This programme is not a booster and is not for children who are up to date with the childhood immunisation programme and, received two doses of the MMR vaccine as a child.

I have attached the routine childhood schedule and a leaflet about MMR and would be grateful if this correspondence could be sent out to year 9 parents and carers.

Many Thanks

As the students only returned to school yesterday, there is no Excellence Everywhere video this week.

News and reminders:

Message from the therapy team:
Happy new year to school staff and families from the therapies' team.

We let people know, at the end of term 2, that we would be adding new therapists to our team due to staff changes and maternity leave. We are now pleased to be able to say that we have new speech and language therapists and a new physiotherapist.

The Speech and Language therapists are:

  • Christopher (Chris) Frusciante to replace Shelly
  • Jennifer (Jenny) Wyllie to cover maternity leave for Melissa.
  • Libby Cooper to provide additional maternity leave cover for January .

All classes will continue to have a named therapist so please ask your child’s class teacher who to contact if you are unsure.  Drop in clinics for information and advice will continue as before.

We also have a new physiotherapist called Melody Potter who will be working alongside Jane Harris, who many of you already know.

With best wishes for a continued successful 2018 here at manor green school therapies.

Dear Parents / Carers

This week's Excellence Everywhere is now available from the website: http://www.manorgreenschool.co.uk/Video-Gallery
Please remember to try using Google Chrome if you have trouble viewing the video.

News and reminders:

  • Middle School Christmas Disco – please note the change of date to Thursday 14 December from 13:30 - 14:30.  Middle School students do not have to wear school uniform on this day
  • Cold weather alert :A level 3 cold weather alert has been issued from Thursday 7th Dec to Tuesday 12th Dec.  This means that temperatures are likely to drop to levels that increase the risk of ill health among vulnerable children and adults.  The advice is to make sure that you stay warm. If going outside make sure you dress appropriately. If indoors, make sure that you keep your heating to the right temperature; heating your home to at least 18°C in winter poses minimal risk to your health when you are wearing suitable clothing . If there is anyone you know who might be at special risk, for example, an older person living on their own, make sure they know what to do to stay warm and are well stocked with food and medications. If you are worried about your health or that of somebody you know, ring NHS 111.  More information is available on the winter health pages at NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk).
  • First School Christmas Production takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, starting at 10am.  Please ensure you have returned your reply slips.
  • School Christmas lunch takes place next Thursday, 14 December

Additional funding to schools for Children who were Looked After 27.11.17

Dear Parent / Carer

Our school may be entitled to additional funding to support your child’s education if your child has been in care and this has stopped under one of the following criteria:
Through Adoption
Through a Special Guardianship Order (SGO)
Through A Residence Order (RO)
Through a Child Arrangement Order (CAO)
You may be aware that schools receive additional funding for children in receipt of Free School Meals which is called Pupil Premium Funding. These children are automatically identified to the school through the Local Authority. The government announced that they are extending this funding to provide additional income for schools to support children who have been adopted from care. This Pupil Premium funding is currently £1900 per year per child.
Unfortunately, we are not advised on whether or not children have ever been in care and or adopted.  We therefore ask parents to let us know that they have adopted children from care so that the school can claim the funding available for the next financial year.

As this is a sensitive issue this notification is to allow you to make the choice whether or not you wish to disclose this information. All information received will be treated in strictest confidence.
This additional funding under the title of Post Looked After Arrangement, is only eligible for children who fit the criteria listed.

There is no obligation for you to share this information with us, but in doing so your child may be given additional support with their education.
If your child fits any of the criteria listed and you are willing for this information to be included in a Department for Education (DfE) Statutory return, please contact Elif Poile via elif.poile@manorgreenschool.co.uk or by calling the school on 01628 513800; giving the name and date of birth of the child concerned as soon as possible.

You will then be contacted and asked to provide supporting evidence, i.e. the Adoption (Court) Order. In order to claim the funding for the next financial year the information will need to be included Census return that is sent to the DfE each JANUARY.

Pupil Premium Plus funding is not ring-fenced. It is designed to provide specific support to raise attainment and address the wider needs of children in this vulnerable group. National statistics show that children in care may face unique challenges and could struggle to keep up with their peers. It is vital that they are given the targeted support they need and the education they deserve to help them get on in life.
