English and Literacy

English and Literacy Department

The overarching aim of the English and Literacy department is to provide students at Manor Green School with the opportunity to develop their Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening skills. Furthermore, it is our intention that every student will leave Manor Green School having made progress specific to them.

Our team achieves this by:

  • Assessing students using WRAT to ascertain their level of learning and make recommendations for next steps
  • Offering ambitious and bespoke 1-1 and small group intervention work – targeted specifically at a learning need and then reviewed for progress to offer specific feedback
  • Differentiating the English curriculum for First School, Specialist, Working Towards and Independence clusters
  • A consistent and sequenced Phonics based Literacy programme, Twinkl Phonics, covering Level 1 and beyond. We also offer Words First which is a sight reading programme for those struggling learning phonics
  • Giving access to Lexia and Lexia Power Up
  • Providing a range of IT based support, where necessary, including Nelson handwriting program, Clicker 7 (Text to speech/speech to text), Reading Avenue and the use of ipads and laptops for students who require them
  • Teaching bespoke Functional Skills English lessons and GCSE English classes for those who are able to access
  • Promoting Active Literacy in all classrooms
  • Providing talking frames to support students verbally
  • Keeping a well stocked library with a range of appropriate materials from authors from a range of backgrounds alongside a reading corner where reading aloud is encouraged
  • Supporting and training staff with all elements of literacy
  • Keeping abreast of current literacy initiatives and disseminating teaching and learning ideas
  • Ensuring the school provides a vibrant and rich learning environment where reading for pleasure and enjoyment of ‘all things’ literacy underpins what we do

We look forward to working with you!
